What an ATS does
An applicant tracking system stores applications, turns each resume into text and fields such as job titles, dates and skills, and lets recruiters search and filter. Some rank applicants against the job description. The details vary by system, so the safest approach is a resume that reads well to any of them and to a person.
Use clear, standard sections
Use headings people expect, such as Experience, Education and Skills, rather than creative alternatives. List jobs with title, employer and dates in a consistent format. Systems pick out fields more reliably when the structure is familiar.
Keep the layout simple
Tables, multiple columns, text boxes, headers and footers, and text inside images can be read in the wrong order or missed. A single-column layout with plain text headings is the safest. Save it as the file type the employer asks for.
Match the job ad, honestly
Read the job ad and note the skills, tools and qualifications it names. Where you genuinely have them, use the same words in your resume, in context: "managed a budget of 200,000" rather than a list of buzzwords. Never claim skills you do not have; the interview will find them out.
Show results, not just duties
Software may get you through the first filter, but a person decides. Describe what you achieved, with numbers where you can: time saved, revenue grown, customers served. That is what makes a recruiter stop and read.
Tailor it for each application
Keep a master resume with everything, then adjust the summary, skills and the order of bullet points for each job. Ten minutes of tailoring usually does more than sending the same resume to fifty employers.
A few common myths
- ✓Hiding keywords in white text does not help; many systems show recruiters the plain text, and it looks like a trick.
- ✓One perfect template does not exist; clarity and relevance matter more than design.
- ✓A low match score from a checker is a prompt to review, not a verdict. Real systems and recruiters weigh things differently.
Check your resume against a real job ad. The Free ATS Resume Checker compares your resume with a job ad, gives a match score out of 100, lists the job ad's words missing from your resume, checks headings, contact details, numbers and length, and flags tables, columns and text boxes in Word files that some systems read wrongly. Your resume stays in your browser.
