Batching
Batching is grouping similar tasks together and completing them in one dedicated block of time, rather than interleaving them with unrelated work.
Example
Handling all email responses in two dedicated blocks per day instead of reactively throughout, reducing the number of times attention shifts away from other work.
Why it matters
Batching reduces the number of context switches, which reduces the cumulative attention cost across a set of similar tasks.
Limits and cautions
Batching does not work equally well for all types of work. Highly urgent or time-sensitive work is often a poor fit for batching.
