Handoff Debt
Handoff debt is missing context, ownership, or acceptance criteria accumulated during a transfer of work, and it reliably predicts later delay and rework.
Example
A project handed from sales to delivery with no documented constraints or promised dates, forcing delivery to re-ask questions sales already answered.
Why it matters
Naming handoff debt explicitly makes it something to design against, rather than a recurring problem blamed on whoever happens to receive the work.
Limits and cautions
The fix is rarely "ask better questions." A handoff with structurally missing context creates the same debt regardless of how diligent the receiving person is.
