Permission Sprawl
Permission sprawl is the gradual accumulation of access grants that outlive the reason they were given, leaving more people with access than currently need it.
Example
A contractor who left a project six months ago still has edit access to its files because nobody removed it after the engagement ended.
Why it matters
Excess access is a real security exposure even when nothing goes wrong; every unnecessary grant is another way sensitive data could be reached.
Limits and cautions
Reviewing access without a regular cadence just delays the same problem. The review needs to actually happen on a schedule to stay effective.
