Span of Control
Span of control is the number of people or areas a single manager is directly responsible for overseeing.
Example
A founder personally overseeing every client relationship, which works at five clients and becomes a bottleneck at twenty-five.
Why it matters
Understanding span of control gives a concrete lens for deciding when a second layer of management is genuinely needed, rather than adding one reactively during a crisis.
Limits and cautions
A narrower span of control is not always better. Too narrow a span adds unnecessary coordination layers and can slow decisions rather than speed them up.
