Story Points
Story points are a relative, unitless measure of a task's size and complexity, used to estimate effort without committing to exact hours.
Example
A team rates a simple task as 1 point and a complex, uncertain one as 8, comparing tasks to each other rather than guessing exact hours for each.
Why it matters
Relative sizing is often easier and more consistent than estimating hours directly, since people are generally better at comparison than absolute prediction.
Limits and cautions
Points can be misused as a productivity metric across people or teams, when they were only ever meant for relative sizing within one team's own scale.
