Tribal Knowledge
Tribal knowledge is operational knowledge that exists only informally, in individuals' memory, rather than documented anywhere accessible.
Example
A pricing exception process that only one person fully understands, discovered only when that person is unavailable.
Why it matters
Tribal knowledge feels efficient until the person holding it is unavailable, at which point it becomes the most expensive kind of missing documentation.
Limits and cautions
Experienced people do not naturally document what they know. Without deliberate capture, expertise usually stays tacit, even among conscientious people.
