Data Provenance
Data provenance is the documented origin and history of a piece of data: where it came from, how it has changed, and who or what modified it.
Example
An invoice figure that traces back through its history to the original signed proposal, rather than existing as an isolated, unverifiable number.
Why it matters
Without provenance, disputes about "which number is right" are unresolvable. Provenance is what makes a piece of data verifiable rather than simply asserted.
Limits and cautions
Provenance does not only matter for large enterprises with compliance requirements. Any business benefits from being able to answer "where did this number come from."
