Exception Path
An exception path is a deliberately designed response for the ways a process can genuinely deviate from its standard case, distinct from an unplanned workaround.
Example
A client-approval process with an explicit path for "client wants to negotiate terms," not just approve or reject.
Why it matters
A process without a designed exception path breaks the first time reality doesn't match the standard case, which happens more often than most process designs assume.
Limits and cautions
Designing for exceptions does not mean designing for every possible scenario. The goal is covering realistic, recurring deviations, not an exhaustive list.
